Identify Your Boxes. The best way is to number each box and make a spreadsheet of its contents. Having a document to reference each box can save hours when you suddenly need the contents in a certain box.
Map It Out. Make a simple drawing and that way you can see where you want to put the items you need to be able to find quickly and those larger items that can be stored at the back of the facility unit. Divide it up. When stowing your items in your storage unit (and when deciding on size) it’s a great idea to make a path down the middle, just in case you need to get to the rear of the unit to avoid having to pull everything out just to get at to that one box you thought you wouldn’t need and which is now in the back. Keep your most frequently used items near the front of our unit.
Stack Carefully. Put largest, heaviest items at the bottom and then pile boxes on top, placing smaller, more fragile items on the top. If possible, make sure labels are to the front, then you can be sure to find the correct box when needed.
Stay In Reach. Keep a ladder or folding stool in your storage unit for accessing items high up.
Proper Storage. Use trash cans and laundry baskets to store brooms and garden equipment, remember to use a liner to keep the bins clean.
Safety. Drain out or seal chemicals and fuel tanks, especially fuel of any garden machinery; make sure tops are on kitchen cleaning materials such as bleach so that you don’t ruin other items in storage with corrosive liquids.
Handcarts. Use handcarts to move heavy stuff – let the handcart take the strain, not your back.
Locks, Keys and Codes. Add any codes you need to have such as your lock if it is not a key but a code. Keep an extra key in your vehicles just in case you forget or lose your primary lock key.
Directions. Put directions to your storage unit in your phone so that you or anyone you need to come and collect your things for you, can be sent directions to find us easily. This includes both the mailing address and the storage unit number.
